Rare Earth Elements, often called REEs, are a group of 17 minerals that play an important role in many of today’s most advanced technologies. Although they are called “rare,” many of these elements are found in the Earth’s crust. The challenge is that they are not often found in large concentrations that are economical to mine and process. Rare earth elements are essential because they have unique magnetic, electrical, and chemical properties that are difficult to replace with other materials. Without them, many of the technologies we rely on every day would not perform as efficiently or, in some cases, would not be possible at all.
